Introduction to Screen Printing Course
2 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm
This screen printing course will explore the different techniques for developing screen print initially using paper and hand painted stencils and then moving onto photographic stencils and combinations of the two. Participants will aim to create and leave with 2 colours screen prints, combining both photographic and hand drawn/cut elements. Suitable for beginners or
as a refresher. (Please note we use water-based inks on paper, not suitable for screen printing onto textiles).

Intermediate to Screen Printing Course
2 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm
Using knowledge from the introductory screen printing course you will have the opportunity to consider screen printing in a more complex and professional manner. Layered imagery, registration, composition, combining different techniques (photographic/autographic stencils) and layering of colour of different opacities will be introduced.
Each participant will aim to leave with an edition of screen prints, using at least 5 different layers/colours.

Colour in Screenprinting
1day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm
In this one day course we will explore the use of colour in screenprinting, using a waterbased (acrylic) ink system, giving you the tools you need to handle colour more accurately and confidently. Walter Sargent famously said "...any discussion of (colour) theory needs to be accompanied by experiments with the colours themselves." In this course participants will not only be introduced to the fundamentals of light and colour, but will also have the opportunity to experiment with colour mixing and testing techniques.
Skills you will learn on the course:
- Fundamentals of colour theory within Fine Arts & colour mixing in screenprinting
- Methods for testing colours and colour matching
- Controlling hue, tone and transparency in screenprinting inks
- Pulling test prints to explore the effect of colour over flat areas, overlaps and across a greyscale spectrum

Screenprinting Summer School
4 day course – 10.30am – 5.30pm
This course is suitable for artists with experience of screen printing who are developing their skills or working on a new project. Darren Van Der Merwe will lead through the processes involved in screenprinting. There will be one-on-one time to discuss your work, what you would like to achieve in your print and what aspects you would like to learn. We will develop a custom training plan based on your aims and needs. There is experienced assistance and support during the production of your print. Content includes:
- Create an artwork of up to 6 colour layers
- Accurate registration
- Solving common printing problems
- Pulling test prints to explore the effect of colour over flat areas, overlaps and across a greyscale spectrum
